In this presentation designed for adoptive parents, I build the case for the importance of honoring birth mothers. Through a study of Moses, I show how honoring the birth mother looks from a biblical perspective. I also share my personal experiences as an adoptee when such an honoring did not take place – and my 40-year struggles with rejection, depression, suicidal thoughts, and fantasies, as well as questioning my faith, having difficulties attaching to my adoptive mother, and not feeling a sense of rootedness in the world. Ending on a note of hope, I offer simple, high-impact ideas for courageous adoptive parents to honor their child’s birth mother – whether in open or closed adoptions – informed by developmental science and my studies as an authorized parent facilitator for the Neufeld Institute.
